SRWUG@ FAQ
What is Super Robot Wars Unlimited Generation Alpha?
This is a multifandom, OC-friendly alternate universe RP based on the Super Robot Wars series of video games.
Wasn’t there another RP like this? What happened to SRW Unlimited Generation?
Yes, the aforementioned RP ran its course and has come to an end. Unlike many RPs, SRW UG played like a true SRW game, and those too have a story and an ending. With the end of the previous RP came the birth of the new. While many elements will be similar, the game is stand-alone, not a sequel.
I used to play in SRW Unlimited Generation, should I read this FAQ?
We have a FAQ just for you here.
What is mecha?
What are you doing here? No, I kid. Mecha is an abbreviated term for mechanical. It’s used to define a genre of television shows and video game which prominently feature the use of giant robots (Gundam, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass). However, depending on who you ask, this will also include series that revolve around the use of handheld technology (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha) or powered suits, mechanical or not (Tekkaman, Guyver).
What is Super Robot Wars?
Super Robot Wars is a strategy-based RPG which features the crossing of several mecha series (prominently giant robots, though recently featuring human-sized units like Tekkaman). In most cases of the game series, each of the series’ plots unfolds over the course of the game, including an original plot for the ‘main’ character(s) to the series. In the case of sequels, a plot may have ended, but the cast will remain along for the ride. Points of plot are often mixed with those of similar event with other series, such as Gundam X and Turn A Gundam arriving at the moon, or Shinji Ikari and Ayato Kamina (of Evangelion and RahXephon fame) sharing their enemy-induced introspective moments.
Is this RP video-game centric?
No. The idea is borrowed from the game series, but the RP is still character interactive. Missions will occur that drive a good deal of plot, but there is plenty of time for interaction in between and this interaction can sometimes drive the plot as well.
What exactly is happening in this RP?
The plot is made up of the canons of applied characters! As new canons are brought in, new aspects and storylines are added to the world and everyone plays through an appropriately crossover'd version of them. Of course, the plot has to start somewhere, and it does so on the Earth after a series of unfortunate...well, apocalyptic events.
A world once at peace has been devastated (multiple times) by external forces; war, aliens, meteorites, etc. After a failed attempt by project HALO to prevent another catastrophe, a man has risen up and created a group that claims that all mechanized forces should be abolished.
Though this group has much support, there are still threats abound which can only be met with mechanized forces. The player characters must endure this, and multiple other threats in order to survive this damaged world.
A force has been put in place to ensure that all giant robots are decommissioned. But of course, people in this harsh world aren't going to just comply. It's the characters role to protect their livelihoods and fight (as per each respective canon) for both their lives and their beliefs. While each respective canon's events play out, the forces of the anti-mecha group will put forth their own efforts to stop the giant robot fighting once and for all. Awesome ensues.
Is this RP very combat heavy?
In theory, yes. However, mecha combat takes place in the form of a real-time group chat. Once the situation is established, players will take turns performing actions and reactions to NPC enemies. Otherwise, characters can interact as they would in any other RP. Missions currently happen 1-2 times a week.
Who can I play exactly? Do they have to have or use a robot?
You can play any character from any series, as long as their canon setting is relevant to the game’s setting. A series such as Hetalia or Ouran Highschool would have little to no place in this RP. However, Lelouch/Zero, Amuro Ray, Shinji Ikari, and Kamina are painfully obvious choices. That’s not to say, however, you must play a character with a mecha or otherwise. Support casts for said series, such as bridge bunnies, mechanics, odd-jobbers, civilian buddies and girlfriends and such are welcome too.
Villains, however, are generally not appable, at least during points in time when they'd be opposed to the player character group. If the villain has a change of heart and joins the good guys at some point, feel free to app them...as long as the course of the game is around or after a point in their canon where that would happen. Villains who remain villains throughout will generally remain inappable throughout. While we will have missions that occur on foot, some characters are completely capable of fending off mecha-sized foes (Domon Kasshu and Master Asia from G Gundam). If you feel that your character has the ability to do so, then feel free to sign up.
Can I play Goku? He can fight giant robots!
No. Straight shonen series without something robotic in some kind of prominent role have little place here. Sorry.
Tokusatsu commonly has giant robots and or mecha themes. Can I play a Power Ranger or Kamen Rider?
Kamen Riders and Sentai teams are allowed, and conveniently, Sentai teams in particular often have giant robots. However, should you want cast mates, or are apping as a group, please coordinate that all of you are available at generally the same times. It will be hard to schedule a mission when only two of the six members are available at the same time. However, if you are playing the ‘sixth’ Ranger (Tommy as Green or White, Genta as ShinkenGold) alone, there should be little conflict with allowance or scheduling.
What about characters who will die?
SRW is infamous for not allowing the death of too many ally characters. Often the intervention of another ally prevents their death, or it’s hit with Handwavium. If you play a character that will die in the future, they don’t have to. If you wish to play a character that HAS died, the book of Handwavium may decree that they actually did not.
What about those Banpresto Originals? Are those the same as original characters?
Not in the sense you’re thinking. The Banpresto Originals are what’s considered the ‘main’ characters for the SRW video game series.
Original characters of the player's devising (OCs) are welcome and encouraged.
What kind of original character can I app?
Typically, one would app the ‘main character’ to an original mecha story, or a supporting character for an original story that's already been established in the game. The application process is the same, such as background and personality, but the mecha and plot events would be entirely original, and would likely require more explanation than those of series that already exist (as we would be lacking any ability to research this short of digging through your private grey matter).
Original characters don't have to always be combatants, however. Mechanics are HIGHLY welcome additions to the cast, and can often be a driving force in finding Handwavium when it comes to others’ mid-series upgrades or new weapons.
What are events, exactly?
"Events" is our general term for distinct, plot-relevant stuff that happens in a show. Events involving combat are usually resolved in our twice-a-week AIM missions whenever they fit into the story, though other important events can be played out in character journals or, if needed, moderated journal logs. Everyone who joins and wishes to have a storyline that's more than just talking to people is expected to provide a detailed list of events with their app (unless they're apping into a canon we already have and they don't want to add anything, of course.)
Note that "detailed" and "scripted" are two different things. This is an RP, so expect multiple people to be acting in missions and plan accordingly. You can set it up so that you get the killing blow on an enemy or have your special plot event, but please make sure there is stuff for other people to do, or at the very least that the event it easy to work into other canon events (this is especially important for OCs, who have a lot more freedom designing events). Also please note that your event list is suggestions; we may need to make changes to the mission events in order to facilitate other canons and the universe as a whole. We will make every effort to discuss this with players as early as possible, so that everyone gets to be awesome.
So, there’s this event that happens in a show, but, can I make it happen better?
Yep, the point of this isn’t to redo the canon events as they were, the point is to take them and well... do what we want with them. If you want to change an event and everyone else related to said event agrees? Sure, why not? Do you want to make an original event involving canon characters (and of course makes sense in the context to the series’ in question)? Why not?
You need mod consent, as well as the consent of everyone related to the event who is currently in the game. But as long as you can get that, who are we to tell you how to play your character?
Is there anything else?
Be Awesome!

Apps open June 7th. The Rp's first mission begins July 7th. There won't be reserves on the first app cycle, but afterward, reserves will be handled normally.

Just, you know, be careful with the human-sized stuff, big guys.
Which continuity did you have in mind?

Too many choices!

I could go for a Kamen Rider Kabuto character, but I've also been looking into Xenoglossia as a choice.

You know they would.

I'm working on an event list for Heero, which might change if he's not occasionally pretending to be a productive member of society at a 'normal' school.
